Community

Coast Union High School rests in the Santa Rosa creek valley fringed by lush pine forests and pasture lands, about three miles from the Pacific Ocean in the village of Cambria. Serving a student population of approximately 160 students, from the coastal communities of Cayucos, Cambria, San Simeon, and Southern Big Sur. 

 

School

CUHS is a California Distinguished School according to U.S. News and World Report, and currently listed as one of Newsweek’s Best American High Schools; ranking number 1 in San Luis Obispo County, Coast Union High School is ranked 140th within California, and 1,056th nationally.  Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams as well as several dual enrollment courses through Cuesta College. The AP® participation rate at Coast Union High School is 73%. The total minority enrollment is 79%, and 85% of students are economically disadvantaged.

CUHS is one of the first public high schools in California to distribute Chromebooks to students on a 1:1 ratio. Classes meet in Block Schedule with students attending 8 classes, four classes meeting on an alternating A/B schedule for 88 minute periods. CUHS has a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and sports teams in addition to its extensive list of college preparatory academic courses

Coast Union offers 4 CTE Pathways as follows:

Animal Science, Ornamental Horticulture, Agricultural Mechanics and Art, Multi Media and Entertainment; and allows concurrent enrollment at the local Community College to earn credits applicable toward high school graduation.

Grade Point Average

GPA is computed using the above quality points. Beginning with grade nine, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation. A minimum of 310 credits is required for graduation. Grades are recorded on the transcript and GPA is computed in January and June.
